Today’s Coveted Working Looks

I’m sure you’re shocked to see another simple frock in my roundup of my daily coveted working looks. Well I’m predictable, however I do truly love this Rebecca Taylor dress for its great simple color, flattering cut, and fantastic shoulder and neckline detailing. And what I love the most about it, is its name – the ‘Desk to Date’ Dress. I’m glad we are on the same page, dear Rebecca Taylor!

Picture110.png

I’ve always love the concept of the satchel, however I’ve never jumped to purchase one due to the fact that it was always just a little too masculine for my style. However this Heimstone Charlie Purse from retailer Je Ne Sais Quoi, has married the satchel and purse ingeniously! I can’t wait to sling this over my shoulder and make a strong working fashion statement!

I love it when we can see how to take one item of clothing and wear it several different ways. ShopChantal.com did just that with one of their many stellar lookbooks. I love how they showed this Rebecca Taylor Nailhead Cardi going from a stylish day of the office in a Shoshanna Belted Peplum Dress to a relaxed look for the weekend with a Kain Label V-Neck. It just goes to show that you don’t have to have one wardrobe for work and one for fun – you can have one entire wardrobe fore everything and work within your items. What a great way to save you both time, money, and sanity when you are getting dressed in the morning!

The Love/Hate Relationship With Fashion

Edited by Debutante Clothing

I’m always complaining about going out to fashion events by myself – I just don’t have many friends that are into fashion. While some people think fashion is frivolous and contributes nothing to the world, others are curating museum exhibits featuring 20th century clothing. This week’s links made me think about the love/hate camps in fashion. Starting with Grit and Glamour’s post on bloggers getting backlash from fashion insiders, Houndstooth + Tortoiseshell’s refreshingly funny admission of Tavi envy, or Fab Lab’s hate of people who hate. But there is some love in sight – British Style Bloggers reminds us to look in the mirror and love ourselves. Enjoy!

Business Casual: “How I Met Your Mother” Inspires a Look on How I Met a Stylish Look Towards Business Casual

February 4th, 2010 by Rachel | Posted in Business Casual | No Comments »

By Huma Rashid

On my blog, I often do business casual outfits (for under $100) that are inspired by some of my favorite television or movie characters. You’ve seen that here, too, as my post from last week was inspired by Blaire Waldorf of CW’s “Gossip Girl.”

Oh, that Gossip Girl. Always, um, gossiping.

(Can you tell I don’t watch the show? No? Okay, good.)

One of my favorite shows, arguably the last great sitcom, is “How I Met Your Mother” starring the incomparable Neil Patrick Harris as Barney Stinson. It’s about a father (voiced by Bob Saget) who tells his children the story of how he met their mother in a series of flashbacks revolving around him and his four best friends, Marshall (Jason Segel), Barney (Neil Patrick Harris), Lily (Alyson Hannigan) and Robin (Cobie Smulders).

Robin’s character became one of my favorites early on simply because she reminded me a lot of myself. If you’ve watched the show, you know that that’s not as favorable a comparison as it might seem. ;-)

Anyway, Robin also has a lovely wardrobe. The actress is just beautiful, for one thing, and as an anchorwoman, her ensembles are always professional…but subtly sexy, too, because, come on, it’s television. No one wears boring slacks and blazers.

Here’s a promotional image that will give you a better idea of her style:

And here’s an outfit inspired by her flirty, professional style.

Crepe Blazer with Button Color in Forest Green ………. $42.50
Eyelet Bodice Chiffon Top ………. $19.80
Trousers ………. $15
Mary Jane Pumps ………. $15

Beaded Drop Earrings ………. $3.20

The black pants are easy enough – just simple trousers, not too tight. I paired it with this lacy chiffon top that buttons up, under this adorable blazer from Tulle, which I just love for their interesting and vintage-inspired pieces. Half of my wardrobe comes from there, no joke.

…And I might have just bought three silk coats from there during the course of writing this blog post.

Don’t judge.

I went with a pair of Mary Janes and green beaded earrings, and there we have a pretty but professional look inspired by New York’s least-watched anchorwoman, for Channel One News, she’s Robin Scherbatsky.

From the Classroom to the Cubicle: Dressing for an Internship – How to Remain Professional while Showing Your Youthful Side

When dressing for an internship, it is often very difficult deciding where to draw the line between youthful and unprofessional. I am here to help you solve this ever-so-challenging dilemma that us students are constantly facing. There is one thing to always keep in mind when putting together the outfit for an internship; as an intern you are being given a test run – aka proving yourself and showing them what you are made of. With that in mind, it is always better to be safe rather then sorry.

I always recommend the boyfriend blazer by Elizabeth and James, it keeps things both in style and professional. If you were to pair this boyfriend blazer with a high-waisted pencil skirt then you would be crossing the line from young student intern into CEO of the company and we don’t want to do that. So, I suggest a pair of black jeans (make sure they are solid black) or a pair of leggings, either spandex (shiny) or cotton to keep things fresh.

As an intern you will most likely be on your feet and running around most of the time. Therefore, it is very important to wear shoes that will allow you to run from the office à FedEx à Starbucks à Office Depot and back. I suggest a flat knee-high boot. If you chose the spandex leggings, suede will be the perfect contrast; if you chose denim then I would recommend a leather boot.

Professional and Youthful

As far as accessories and make-up go, keep it simple. Nothing says “I am not ready for this position” like a full arm of bangles, big hoop earrings, and a truck load of makeup. Think basic; a cute pair of earrings and just a touch of eye-liner and blush will do the trick. If you are living in Chicago or somewhere else that is freezing, you can avoid the Casper the Friendly Ghost look by adding a touch of bronzer!

If you follow these guidelines you will definitely be looking youthful and professional at your internship. Always remember, you can switch up the shoes and bottoms to have a few different outfits!

Today’s Coveted Working Looks

It is good to know your individual style when dressing in general, not just for work. For me, I am infamous for wearing all black or neutral colors with colorful shoes and statement accessories. I absolutely love these pumps by Omelle. The muted pink with the sweater material detailing and the unique heel totally make me swoon. I would love to wear these with some textured tights and a simple black or heather gray shift dress. It would no doubt add a very fun skip to my work step.

I frequently discuss how to wear items that can take you from work to evening. This Vince Cowl Neck Halter Sweater has a high enough neck to be appropriate to the office, and the length is ideal – pair it with a fitted shrug or long-sleeved bolero and skinny black trousers and pumps, and you have a gorgeous work look that also offers an easy transition into a fun cocktail night look.

What I love so much about some items is that they are versatile. This gorgeous Diane von Furstenberg Antoine Blazer is shown below as an open jacket with black slacks, and also cinched with a Motif 56 Bell Belt with the sleeves folded up to the elbow. These are two completely different looks that offer a work appropriate outfit and a more casual ensemble. No matter the look, it’s a look to love!
