Business Casual: “How I Met Your Mother” Inspires a Look on How I Met a Stylish Look Towards Business Casual

On my blog, I often do business casual outfits (for under $100) that are inspired by some of my favorite television or movie characters. You’ve seen that here, too, as my post from last week was inspired by Blaire Waldorf of CW’s “Gossip Girl.”

Oh, that Gossip Girl. Always, um, gossiping.

(Can you tell I don’t watch the show? No? Okay, good.)

One of my favorite shows, arguably the last great sitcom, is “How I Met Your Mother” starring the incomparable Neil Patrick Harris as Barney Stinson. It’s about a father (voiced by Bob Saget) who tells his children the story of how he met their mother in a series of flashbacks revolving around him and his four best friends, Marshall (Jason Segel), Barney (Neil Patrick Harris), Lily (Alyson Hannigan) and Robin (Cobie Smulders).

Robin’s character became one of my favorites early on simply because she reminded me a lot of myself. If you’ve watched the show, you know that that’s not as favorable a comparison as it might seem. ;-)

Anyway, Robin also has a lovely wardrobe. The actress is just beautiful, for one thing, and as an anchorwoman, her ensembles are always professional…but subtly sexy, too, because, come on, it’s television. No one wears boring slacks and blazers.

Here’s a promotional image that will give you a better idea of her style:

And here’s an outfit inspired by her flirty, professional style.

Crepe Blazer with Button Color in Forest Green ………. $42.50
Eyelet Bodice Chiffon Top ………. $19.80
Trousers ………. $15
Mary Jane Pumps ………. $15

Beaded Drop Earrings ………. $3.20

The black pants are easy enough – just simple trousers, not too tight. I paired it with this lacy chiffon top that buttons up, under this adorable blazer from Tulle, which I just love for their interesting and vintage-inspired pieces. Half of my wardrobe comes from there, no joke.

…And I might have just bought three silk coats from there during the course of writing this blog post.

Don’t judge.

I went with a pair of Mary Janes and green beaded earrings, and there we have a pretty but professional look inspired by New York’s least-watched anchorwoman, for Channel One News, she’s Robin Scherbatsky.
