Learning Layers: Finding the Perfect Layer-Friendly Long-Sleeved Top

December 21st, 2009 by Rachel | Print

Winter is the season of layering. One of the classic layering items for the workplace is the long-sleeved top under the shift dress or button-down short-sleeved top. Finding the perfect long-sleeved top is easier said than done, however. Most long-sleeved tops are usually cotton crew neck and don’t fit well, and appear too casual for the workplace. And you also have the issue of the neckline when it comes to what you are wearing over your top. For instance, you can’t wear a v-neck long-sleeved top underneath a round-neck shift dress – the lines won’t match up and instead of complimenting, they would clash one another.

This is my all-time favorite long-sleeved top from Kate Boggiano. The neckline is extremely flattering and would go with any neckline that you decide to pair with it. Plus the sleeves reach below the wrist (which is a rarity in most long-sleeved tops) and the nylon/spandex construction makes it fit in all the right places and comfortable on its own and with other items.

In my opinion, J. Crew has the best collection of feather-light long-sleeved tops. You usually have to wear a camisole underneath it because it’s so light, however that type of texture is preferable when layering items over your top. You want to be comfortable in your layers, not fighting for breath and movement.

It is a rare feat to beat the comfort of jersey. This LNA jersey long-sleeved top is a perfect wardrobe staple – and I especially love the bell-shape to the sleeves. I can easily see this with a brown tweed cropped blazer or riding jacket with statement buttons.

Not every layering piece has to have a simple neckline. Sometimes the most fashion-forward layering statement you can make, is pairing an interesting neckline with a simple neckline over it. On the left you see a lovely cowl-neck top by Splendid layered under a simple. grandfather cardigan. And on the right, a v-neck James Perse top is featured with a round-neck jacket and statement blue scarf. Sometimes the most flattering necklines, are the ones you make on your own. With that being said, happy layering and happy styling!

That’s a good point about picking the right neckline

I found that to be quite important when matching up v-necklines.. and usually the more open the neckline is on the long-sleeved top, the better it’ll match with things.
