By Jacqueline Rezak

Sometimes as an intern, you will be asked to attend events such as networking functions, panels, holiday association parties, and even golf outings. When this opportunity comes along I suggest you plan your outfit ahead of time to avoid any nervous breakdowns. It also doesn’t hurt to ask around on what to wear – play the ‘intern’ card and admit a bit of ignorance. People won’t judge you and they will actually most likely look at your efforts as a good sign that you want to make a good impression. That is never a bad thing in the working world. Here’s a good look for a networking event in the corporate world.

Working Event by WorkWardrobe featuring Luella dresses

Chances are this may be a bit too much on the formal side for your industry. I’ve discussed attire for the arts industry in the past, so don’t think I didn’t ignore you musicians and fashion folk out there!

Representing your Company by WorkWardrobe featuring DKNY bags

These events are the time to show your company what you’ve got aka- let them know why they hired you. So, when you are attending an event you are representing your company and there for should dress the part. However there is a caveat: I am all for fun outfits but when you are working an event, make sure to tie something into your outfit to keep it professional, such as the blazer in the outfit above.

Going to a work event and unsure of how to strut your new-to-the-job style? Let us know we can help!

Normally when I know that I have an event to go to in advance, I make sure I have an outfit prepared so there is no muss or fuss when it is time to get ready. I highly recommend this plan of action as there is nothing worse then feeling like you have nothing to wear right before a big event.

Office Party by WorkWardrobe featuring Stuart Weitzman shoes

If your event is in the summer, an outfit like the one above would be a good way to go. Try something floral- we have seen a lot of floral prints with external zippers this season. A floral dress would be a cute way to go paired with black patent leather pumps. While this may feel a bit exposed (unless your in an exceptionally warm climate where this is acceptable) pair this dress with a blazer to give your look a professional spin. Getting ready for an office event? Let us know we would love to help!

When interning in a big city, it is much more likely that you will be working around people who dress more “city-like” than they would in small towns or suburbs. This is not a bad thing whether you are in the burbs or in the city, but it is something to consider when getting dressed each morning.

City Look by WorkWardrobe featuring Adam

What does this mean for you? Well, I think if you walk into an office in a small town where everyone is wearing a simple suit set and you’re wearing an outfit like the one above, you will feel a bit out of place. Same goes for the city; you don’t want to get lost in the crowd of professionals by wearing something bland. Rather, “dress the part”. Depending on the internship, the outfits may vary but the example above would be a great choice for an internship downtown! Plus it’s a great outfit to take from an internship into your full time job!

As an intern, it is common to not have very much experience dressing for the office. This could lead to moments of absolute misery when running late for a meeting or a deadline. The last thing you want to worry about is what you are going to wear day in and day out.

Bold and Basic by WorkWardrobe featuring Frye boots

Above I have created an outfit that is a good example of an easy way to put pieces together to create a great intern outfit. To begin, start with a shirt-dress and pair this with a thick belt. Place the belt wherever you feel you have a challenging area of your body (hips, stomach, etc.). Then comes the easy part- a pair of leggings and knee boots could complete any outfit that includes at a shirt-dress. Pretty easy huh?

I have given you outfit ideas in the past for internships in music and fashion, but because I believe that the freedom to dress however you may please in these industries can be so lenient, I felt that one tip would not suffice. I am here to give you another way to go about creating an outfit for an internship in the arts industry.

Intern in the Arts by WorkWardrobe featuring TopShop blazers

In the look above we paired a green pencil skirt with a basic tank. The green pencil skirt is used as our accent piece while our basic tank is mainly for style. This is a simple look to achieve without trying very hard. You can take any pencil skirt and pair it with any (work appropriate) tank or t-shirt and throw a blazer over it to have a very professional yet artistic combination!

Depending on which company and which state you are interning in, your outfit for an entertainment internship may vary. If you are in Los Angeles, your required dress is going to be more laid back then that of New York City. Some interns think that because you are in a competitive industry, you must dress to compete with the other people in your department. You should not be dressing to compete with other people but rather dressing to make yourself feel good and confident.

Entertainment Intern by WorkWardrobe featuring DKNY shoes

There are many different internship positions one may obtain in the entertainment industry ranging from human resources to accounting all the way over to production and public relations. Dressing for each is simple. Nothing should be too tight or too revealing. You should look professional and put together so that you can you do the best work you possible can to obtain that full time position!

When it comes to internships in business such as finance, economics, trading, accounting, etc., it is important to look extremely professional. Within these fields there is not much room for showing your creative side or individual style – after all, business is business. As a business intern you want give off the impression that you are dependable, professional, and reliable through your work but also through your clothes.

Business Intern by WorkWardrobe featuring DKNY bags

Usually you will be given a dress code when you get hired as an intern for a large company such as business professional; this means you can work with different variations of a suit. For example, a pant suit- with a blazer, slacks, pumps, and a blouse. Another variation would be a pencil skirt, blazer, button down collared shirt, and pumps. Although the clothing options don’t seem as exciting as they may for other internships there are ways to spice things up just a little. Try different blouses into the mix, floral patterns, solid colors, etc. are all acceptable when worn under a blazer. Also, don’t forget your accessories! Let us know if you’re a business intern! What do YOU wear to the office?

Internships in the music industry can vary depending on what exactly you want to do within the industry. For example, you may be an intern for music journalism and report on different bands and concerts. You may intern at a big company where you simply file and copy. And of course, you may be a musician. Each position is very different and requires different means of dress. There is one rule that never changes: When you are in an “office” or “corporate” setting, you don’t want to stand out very much and should always tone it down. But, if you are in a more laid back setting this is one industry where you can show your personal rocker style.

Music Intern by WorkWardrobe featuring TopShop tops

In the outfit I put together above, I focused on keeping it simple and classy while adding some rock star style into the mix. Black skinny jeans are a good place to start because it makes the additional pieces easier to match, and if you can tuck a shirt into them, it makes for a clean look. In my outfit I added a pair of studded flats and a leather vest to go out the tee. Nothing screams rock n’ roll like leather and studs!

Calling all east-coasters! Internships on the east coast can definitely vary depending on the position but generally the constant theme we see on this end of the map is preppy and plain. When being in an environment where the form of dress is “plain Jane”, it can feeling boring and even difficult to create enough outfits to have the same look.

East Coast Intern by WorkWardrobe featuring Izod cardigans

Here are a few pointers: Pick out a few pairs of skinny jeans, dress pants, or whatever is appropriate in your office. Next step is load up on the cardigans; they are usually flattering, easy to take on and off, and come in a lot of different styles. Under the cardigan you can always wear a button down collared shirt (super prepped out) or just a plain shirt. By interchanging the cardigan, pants, and a pair of calf-high boots you can make enough outfits to get you through your internship!

By Jacqueline Rezak

Oh how I envy each of you who get to experience an internship in the state of California as it is such a wonderful place. The vibe in San Francisco is not the same as the one in Los Angeles, so if you were thinking you could just wear something super trendy with buckles and zippers you were sadly mistaken. San Francisco while still an incredible city to intern in, has a different set of styles and moves then Los Angeles.

San Fran Intern by WorkWardrobe featuring Tory Burch bags

If you were to intern in San Francisco there is one ohhhh so very important thing to remember. FLATS. There is a different reason behind the critical pair of flats in San Fran then in NYC. Reason being, imagine running around doing errands all day (NY)- okay now think about running up and down hills all day doing errands (San Fran); so you get the point. As the weather is not always warm it is important to plan for cool weather, I suggest a turtleneck tucked into a pair of J Brand skinnies. Lastly, add a scarf, messenger bag, and pair of sunglasses and your all set to take over the city!
