Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week was an amazing experience – and every Fashion Week brings its own surprises and highlights. However this was the final runway shows of Bryant Park and the first day of the shows we received horrifying news of Alexander McQueen’s death. Thus to be said, this was no ordinary Fashion Week. Yet as it is famously stated, “The show must go on.” and go on it did, and despite the cloud overhead, the designers featured this season brought forth some amazing fashions and shows worthy of their own red carpet.

We at TheWorkingWardrobe were really excited to bring forth to you our favorite looks of the runway that can be translated to looks at the workplace. Here is a roundup of some of our favorites.

We absolutely loved how Cyntha Steffe brought forth a youthful and fun sense to her fashions, many of which (with a few longer hemlines) could easily be translated to the workplace. This slack and cropped jacket ensemble conveys a sense of strength while remaining fashion forward – a perfect look for a young executive looking to make a fashion statement among the ‘suits’. (Photo: Style.com)

This was one of our favorite looks during all of Fashion Week. Michael Angel took the simple blouse and skirt combination and turned it into a very powerful but incredibly stylish and feminine working look. The bit of ‘tough’ thrown in by the black leather loves and black belt add some authority to this blend of neutrals, pulling everything together for a winning runway (and working) look. (Photo: Style.com)

Every woman loves her draping. It’s very flattering to the body and always conveys a touch of elegance to your clothing. This look from the Costello Tagliapietra collection is an ideal example of how draping can work with a work ensemble. Plus, the length of the skirt is not only appropriate for the workplace, but it proves that calf-length skirts and dresses aren’t all unflattering. Shown here with statement green pumps really shows an office look that truly works it. (Photo: New York Magazine)

We love highlighting the ‘out of the box’ office look. This ensemble by ADAM showcases a very work-appropriate ensemble, but one that you wouldn’t look at and automatically think, “This would be a great work look!” That’s the beauty in it! We always wax on that it is important to have just one wardrobe and mix and match within it for all of your outfits – both for work and fun – versus just having your “work clothes” that most often than not are not that fashionable as you don’t care as much about donning them at work much less anywhere else. ADAM proves that you can make a strong fashion statement at the office utilizing your existing wardrobe, and perhaps even breathing some life into your dress code. (Photo: New York Magazine)

Peter Som didn’t just show us some amazing work looks, he also showed us the genius of mixing colors and patterns into amazing wardrobe ensembles. We can’t tell you how excited we were to see color coming down the runway. This season has been primarily blacks and neutrals, which we as working girls do admittedly love, however this collection breathed a sense of fun bright style into our land of basics. The popping green top with belted red cardigan and purple skirt make a gorgeous statement without being too loud or too crazy as one may at first thing. Swap the hiking boots for a pair of tweed round-toed pumps and you have yourself a kicking work look! (Photo: New York Magazine)

Speaking of color, the golden browns and brick reds with the gray hose and boots in this Elie Tahari look completely took our breath away. The necklace also balances out the difference in color tone between the outfit and the footwear. Simply stunning – we’d most assuredly want the woman wearing this outfit not only as my supervisor, but as our fashion muse. (Photo: New York Magazine)

And of course we couldn’t forget our interns and job-seeking college students! Sophie Theallet brought so many youthful looks to the runway that our interns were absolutely drooling over. The knits over the more delicate skirts and dresses created a very flattering and creative working look that takes the concept of the cardigan coverup into the Millennium. (Photo: New York Magazine)

What else did we see at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and what will you see come this Fall? There was a distinct nod to the 1930’s and 1940’s along with many dark neutral colors with emphasis on blacks and grays. We also saw long fingerless gloves, harem pants, large scarves, and lots and lots of fur. The looks coming forth will be warm, mostly mix and match dark, with ingenious styles of layering. As excited as we are for a warm spring, we left Fashion Week in high anticipation of wrapping up in these fashions come next fall – in a new venue with a whole new set of fashions and possibilities.

Calvin Klein is known for his clean straight lines and simple yet very high quality clothing. He changed things up a bit for his Fall 2010 collection. Alongside the clean straight lines, Klein featured a type of starched billow sleeve that added a dimension to his usually straight-forward attire. One of my very first pieces of office attire was a wrap dress purchased from Calvin Klein, and it still hangs in my closet as a very strong staple to my work wardrobe. I am quite excited to add another one of his pieces to my ‘standards’ collection, especially with the touch of elegance added to this upcoming collection, and perhaps soon to my closet.

We saw a lot of black come down the runway during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Designer Ralph Lauren decided to veer away from that note and give us browns, grays and florals – I have to say it was a very lovely look for the fall. Big shoulders were also very prominent with the deep velvet jackets and coats – and not shoulder-pad-big, but rather riding-jacket-esque with a bit of Victorian thrown in. The collection definitely gave the work look a bit of an outdoorsy air, but I don’t think anyone would argue against a breath of fresh air within an enclosed office space.

Brian Reyes worked absolute wonders with taking the simple top and skirt and turning it into a fabulous fashion statement. I love how he constructed the folds of his skirts to lie on top of one another without creating too much volume and instead create a very architectural design that doesn’t overpower a simple top but rather compliments it to create a very strong and intriguing look for the Fall 2010 runway. And I’ve mentioned the boatneck zip-up coat at other runway shows, and it was a delight to see it again, especially in such a bold color! I’d love to work any of these looks at the office as it would definitely breathe some life into my working wardrobe!

There’s something to be said for the color of ‘camel’. It’s very glamorous and goes with just as much variety of color and accessory as does black. I haven’t seen much of it during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week as most of the designers have stuck with the darker classic, however it definitely dominated the runway at the Michael Kors show. No complaining here of course! The light tawny-colored gown I feel is one of those garments that can be pulled off with much style and pomp during the work day but is just as elegant as a little black dress, making the work to evening transition quite seamless. A black gown during the workday, however, may be difficult to pull off unless you are working in a cocktail lounge. And men, yes I know I’ve ignored you for most of Fashion Week, so I’m excited to share some fantastic working looks with you as well that Kors brought forth! Even men can really work it on the runway; and I think I’ll know what my male friends will be getting for holiday gifts come Fall!

There aren’t many dresses or skirt suits that beat the feminine prowess of those in tweed – it pretty much is equivalent to the male power suit – and albeit much more stylish. I also recently got into the recent trend of pairing the long-sleeved top with the boatneck dress, and it was fun to see a professional’s take on the ensemble. Trust me I was taking notes during the show – especially of the gloves to offset the dress to shirt balance.

And I don’t know about you, but I was definitely inspired to work my next skirt suit with a pair of polka-dot hose!
